Haines Marine is a family boatyard in North Norfolk, England, set up by Bob and Mary Haines in 1980 and now run by their children. It began with canoes and made its name with hand built motor cruisers, stressing that its boats do not come off a production line. The yard works for two kinds of water. Its inland cruisers suit rivers and canals, while the offshore models are built for the coast. The name tells you which is which: after the length in feet comes River Estuary, Coastal or Offshore, and the layout Sedan, Aft Cabin or Flybridge.

Our records list 23 Haines models, all classed as motor yachts. The Haines 37 B from 1987 is the earliest, and the 365 Offshore is carried through to 2023, although eleven models stop in 2005. Sizes are tightly grouped: the 29 and the two 315 versions measure 8.84 metres, the Haines 40 reaches exactly 12. The 32 has the widest choice with a base version, Coastal, Offshore and River Estuary, and the 29 was also offered as a Sedan and with electric drive.

On inland water these boats spend the season on a river mooring, cruising slowly between locks and villages with a low air draft in mind. The coastal and offshore versions sit in estuary marinas and wait for a settled forecast. Over winter many come ashore under cover. Gelcoat, canopies and teak need yearly attention, and the electric 29 asks for care of its batteries rather than its diesel.
