Halmatic was one of the early names in British glassfibre boatbuilding. Patrick de Laszlo founded the company, and in 1952 it produced the Flying Twenty with designer Uffa Fox, an early production boat moulded in GRP. In 1960 the Hunting Group took over the firm, then based in Portsmouth and moulding hulls from eight to 76 feet. Halmatic moulded for Camper & Nicholsons, Moody and other yards and supplied part-assemblies for others to fit out. Since the Nicholson 32 hull was already being laid up there, Halmatic agreed with Camper & Nicholsons to build the complete yacht, and a long line of Nicholson designs followed. The company later became part of Vosper Thornycroft and moved on to larger craft.

Our model records list 23 designs: ten motor yachts, nine sailing yachts, two RIBs, one open sailing boat and one motorboat. The oldest is the Nicholson 26 from 1964, followed in 1965 by the Nicholson 32 and 38 and later by the Nicholson 42 and the 32 Mark-10. Under Halmatic's own name come the Halmatic 8,80, 30, 52 and 53 sailing yachts and the motor yachts from the Halmatic 32 up to the Halmatic 85, which at 25.9 metres is the largest boat of the brand. Add the Shead 34, also listed as the Halmatic 110, the Weymouth 34 and the Serviceman 1200. The Pacific 22 and Arctic 28 RIBs date from the nineties; at 6.7 metres the Pacific 22 is the smallest. No design runs past 1999, and seven measure 15 metres or more.

Early GRP hulls were laid up thick, and many Nicholsons from the sixties are still sailing hard. Age shows elsewhere: in balsa or plywood cores under the deck, in tired chainplates, in original wiring and in engines that have been replaced two or three times. On a used Nicholson 32 a moisture meter over the deck and a close look at the keel bolts tell more than the gloss of the topsides. The big Halmatic motor yachts deserve a survey of fuel tanks, shafts and stern gear, since parts for engines of that era can be hard to find. A boat with a thick folder of yard invoices is usually the better buy.
