Halvorsen Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

The Island Gypsy and Halvorsen names go back to Kong & Halvorsen Marine & Engineering, set up in Hong Kong in 1975 as a joint venture between the Australian boatbuilding family Lars Halvorsen Sons and the builder Joseph Kong. The aim was to design and build pleasure boats for buyers around the world. In the early 1980s production moved across the border into southern China, and the plant closed in 2000. The boats are recognisable by their trawler style. The number in the name roughly gives the length in feet.

Our model records hold 18 designs, all motor yachts. Fourteen carry the Island Gypsy name and four the Halvorsen name. The Island Gypsy opens with the 9.14 metre 30 S, followed by three versions of the 32 at 9.78 metres and two each of the 36, 40, 44, 49 and 51, which reaches 15.55 metres. Above them sit the Halvorsen 56 SC at 17.07 metres, the 57, the 62 and the 68 CMY at 20.73 metres. Build years start in 1975 and end in 2001 with the last Island Gypsy 36.

Every one of these yachts is now at least a quarter of a century old, and many have had a new engine, new tanks or a refitted interior. Teak trim, where fitted, wants regular attention, and a lift out each autumn gives a chance to check the hull, shafts and seacocks. Most owners keep them on a marina berth and use them for coastal cruising and long weekends aboard.
