Hampton builds motor yachts in East Asia. The house goes back to a works founded in Taiwan by C. Y. Chen in 1965, which began by building heavy cruising sailing yachts. As demand for sailing yachts fell away the family turned to the motor yacht; the Hampton Yacht Building Company was formed in 1992 and production was extended to Shanghai. The company is still family led. You recognise the yachts by the tall hull with its pronounced sheer, the walkaround side deck and the wheelhouse with its large upright windows; the Endurance models carry an unusually high bow.

Our model records list 44 Hampton models, 40 of them motor yachts and four sailing yachts. Build years start in 1991 and run into current production. Forty four series are recorded: the Endurance long range line with 600, 658 LRC, 680 LRC, 680 Skylounge and 720; the Pilothouse models 580, 620 and 680; the Sedan 560 and 720; the Skylounge 700 and 720; and the 590, 650, 700 and the 830 in its Euro version. From the early years come the Hampton 42, 42 Europa, 42 MY and 45 and the sailing yachts 43 and 43 PH Sloop. Lengths run from 12.7 to 28.2 metres, half the models between 17.8 and 22.2 metres.

A long range cruiser is built around fuel and range rather than speed, which shows in the depth of the hull and in what is packed below the sole: engines, generator, stabilisers, watermaker, tankage. None of it appears in a length figure and all of it is part of what the boat is. The yard's own history also runs through the boats, since a house that began with heavy ocean sailing yachts tends to build motor yachts the same way.
