Harpain; cover, cost and conditions
In our records, Harpain is the builder of the Helgoland yachts, a family of large motor and sailing yachts from the sixties and seventies. We found no reliable details on location, founding or designer, so this page rests on the model data. It shows a range aimed at owners of long passages: sailing yachts from 14 to over 17 metres and motor yachts up to 30 metres. The common name Helgoland ties them together. On the Marine motor yachts the number gives the length in decimetres, so the Marine 240 is just over 23 metres and the Marine 300 exactly 30. Only the Berthe-Pauline carries a name of her own.
Our model records list seven Harpain designs, four motor yachts and three sailing yachts, six of them named Helgoland. The motor yachts are the Helgoland Marine 170, 240 and 300 and the Berthe-Pauline; the sailers are the Helgoland 180, Atlantik and Commodore. Build years run from 1965 to 1975: the Marine series, the 180 and the Berthe-Pauline start in 1965, Atlantik and Commodore in 1967. Lengths range from the 13.95 metre Atlantik to the 30 metre Marine 300, with the Berthe-Pauline at 21.5 metres.
Any Helgoland still sailing today is more than fifty years old and has usually been through serious restoration. A survey of hull, rig and engine comes first, followed by a written record of the work done. These yachts live on a fixed berth and come out by crane, and an indoor winter hall is worth every effort for the deck and joinery.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
