Hellingskip was a yard in Sneek, Friesland, that built motor yachts. Brokers single out the hull above all: a multi-chine form that sits steadily in the water. The boats were built in steel, as the sales particulars of a 1000 AK confirm. Besides the models in our records, larger types such as the 1300 and 1330 also turn up on the used market. The letters after the number are Dutch: OK stands for open kuip, an open aft cockpit, and AK for achterkajuit, an aft cabin. The number itself gives the length in centimetres, more or less. Today these yachts change hands through brokers in the Netherlands and Germany.

Our model records hold five designs, all motor yachts and all listed from 1995. The Hellingskip 850 OK at 9.05 metres is the smallest; the 1000 comes as OK and AK at ten metres each, and the 1100 likewise, both at 10.95 metres. The open cockpit versions are listed until 2001, the 1100 AK until 2003 and the 1000 AK until 2005, the longest run of all. None reaches into recent build years, so every Hellingskip is now a used boat more than twenty years old. A 1999 1000 AK offered for sale gives the scale: 3.40 metres of beam, one metre of draught, around eight tonnes, two cabins and a 75 hp Yanmar diesel.

Steel is strong and forgiving, but it rusts from the inside out. On a used Hellingskip, have the plating measured ultrasonically, especially in the bilge, under the engine and around the waterline. Look under deck fittings, window frames and the rubbing strake, where water collects and paint gives way first. Check the anodes and ask when the underwater coating was last renewed. The Yanmar diesels of that era are robust, but cooling system, exhaust elbow and engine mounts deserve attention after more than two decades. An aft cabin version also has more hidden corners to inspect than the open cockpit boats.
