Jefferson Yachts came from the American heartland rather than the coast. Leon Shaw founded the yard in 1982 in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on the banks of the Ohio River. Its first boat was a 48 foot cockpit motor yacht, and that type stayed at the core of the range: roomy motor yachts with an aft deck or cockpit, built for long passages on rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Marquessa and Rivanna became the defining lines, and a batch of new designs in 1990 brought in the Marlago boats among others. The yard is no longer building, but its yachts are still bought, sold and cruised, in Europe as well as at home.

Our model records list 23 designs, 20 motor yachts and three open motorboats, all with build years from 2007. The Marlago 28' Open, 29' Open and 35' Cuddy/Open are the smallest at 8.72 to 10.67 metres. Above them come the Rivanna SE at 42, 45 and 50 feet, the Pilothouse line from the SE 52' to the 64', and the Marquessa at 57, 60 and 63 feet, partly in cockpit form. Those 15 designs run to 2014 in our records. The eight large yachts carrying the Jefferson name, Deckhouse and Pilothouse from 68 to 82 feet plus the International 82' and 95', are listed to 2011. At 28.68 metres the Jefferson International 95' is the largest, and 18 designs measure 15 metres or more.

A river-built American motor yacht crossing to European waters brings a few things to check. The electrical system runs on 110 volts and 60 hertz, so shore power, chargers and appliances need converters or rewiring. Generators, air conditioning and watermakers are standard on the larger models and deserve a service history of their own. On a used Marquessa or Pilothouse a surveyor will look at the shafts, the stabilisers if fitted and the fuel tanks, which on yachts of this age can be hard to reach. Spare parts usually come through American dealers, so a list of suppliers from the previous owner is worth having.
