Kent; cover, cost and conditions
Kent motor boats come from Cory Yachts in Sandwich, a small town in the county that gave the boats their name. Brian Cory built himself an Enterprise dinghy in 1957 and turned that passion into a business in 1966; today his son Simon runs the yard. The work has ranged from racing dinghies to cruising motorboats, delivered across the United Kingdom and to the rest of Europe. Sources describe the Kent 33 as a sturdy all weather displacement boat in GRP with four berths in three cabins. The Kent 28 was developed from the Kent 27, built to CE Category B and fitted with engines from 40 to 200 hp depending on whether the owner keeps to rivers and estuaries or heads for open water. The Kent name points to the county of origin rather than to a separate company.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as motor yachts. The earliest is the Kent Ocean 910 at 8.8 metres, listed from 1991 to 1997. The Kent 27 Classic at 8.1 metres follows from 1995 to 2003, and the Kent 28 at 8.45 metres from 1997 to 2008. The largest is the Kent 33 Cruiser at 10.26 metres, listed from 2000 to 2007. None of them reaches the most recent build years, and the list ends with build year 2008. Three of the four sit between eight and nine metres; only the 33 Cruiser goes beyond. In our records the range is small and consistent: compact cabin boats for coast, river and estuary.
A Kent is a boat for every season on English tidal waters, and used examples show how they have been kept. Engines in the range vary widely, from modest diesels for the river to twin installations for the sea, so the choice should match where the boat will be used. Shaft seals, engine mounts and the cooling system are worth checking on any boat of this age. The GRP hull and the wheelhouse windows deserve a close look for crazing and leaks. Estuary boats often take the ground at low water, and a look at the keel and the hull bottom shows whether that has left marks. A sea trial in a bit of chop says more about a displacement boat than any brochure.
