Klaassen; cover, cost and conditions
Klaassen is the name of a Dutch family yard whose boats became known as Super van Craft. Brothers Jan and Leen Klaassen started building wooden boats in 1933. Their first steel yacht was launched in 1947, and from then on the yard built only in steel. The Super van Craft yachts took shape in the fifties and sixties: classic motor yachts with a long sheer, plenty of wood below decks and carefully fitted saloons. In the eighties and nineties the yard turned to larger vessels. Building has stopped, but the yachts have a loyal following among people who love classic steel boats.
Our model records list 23 designs, 22 motor yachts and one motor sailer. No fewer than 18 entries carry the Super van Craft name, and the figure in the name is usually the length: the Super van Craft 9,50 measures 9.5 metres, while the 19,50 of 1988 to 1994 is the largest at 19.5 metres. The oldest is the Super van Craft 14,00, listed from 1960. Beside them stand the Klaassen-Kutter 1020 and 1120, the Klaassen Vlet 1020, the 13 metre Motorvlet and the Rundspantyacht 1500, a round-bilge yacht. The motor sailer sold under the Super van Craft name, built from 1993 to 1999, is the youngest entry. Six designs measure 15 metres or more, and none is shorter than 9.5 metres.
Steel is forgiving in a collision and unforgiving with neglect. On a used Super van Craft the places to look are where water sits: under the cockpit sole, behind the fuel tanks, along the bilge stringers and beneath old teak decks, where corrosion can run unseen. An ultrasonic thickness survey of the hull plating tells a buyer far more than fresh paint. Wiring and plumbing have often been renewed in stages over the decades, and it pays to know which owner did what. A yacht that has spent its life on canals and rivers has been spared salt water, but its rubbing strakes will have worked hard in the locks.
