Classic keelboats; cover, cost and conditions
Drachen, Folkeboot, H-Boot and Starboot are classic keelboat classes that have been sailed for decades and have active racing fleets. They are boats between 6 and 9 metres with no cabin or with only a minimal one, many of them built in wood, many rebuilt in GRP. For the insurance, the type of construction is the first question.
A wooden boat needs a valuation report and the wood surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros; a GRP replica follows the normal route. In both cases racing use is the point that has to be expressly agreed, since with these classes competition is the norm and not the exception. And the sail wardrobe of an actively raced Drachen often exceeds the value of the boat; it belongs in the sum as technical equipment.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a classic racing keelboat?
With an agreed value, racing included and the sail wardrobe listed separately. For wooden hulls a valuation report and the wood surcharge from 20,000 euros are added.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
