Kuhnle Werft; cover, cost and conditions

Kuhnle Werft is a yard in Rechlin on Lake Müritz in north-eastern Germany. It belongs to the group built up by Harald Kuhnle, who started the houseboat hire firm Kuhnle-Tours in 1981. In October 1997 the group bought the Rechlin shipyard site at auction, then in poor shape, and in March 1998 the first Kormoran 1140, named Kiebitz, was handed over. According to the company history it was the first houseboat with hot water heating and double glazing. The first Kormoran 1500 was christened in 2004, and the fiftieth houseboat from Rechlin was finished in April 2006. A Kormoran is a compact inland motor yacht with a tall deckhouse, refined over years of the group's own hire experience.

Our model records list five designs, all motor yachts of the Kormoran range. The oldest is the Kormoran 1100 at 11 metres, recorded from 1989 to 1995. Three designs share the years 1997 to 2013: the Kormoran 940 at 9.4 metres, the 1140 at 11.3 metres and the 1280 at 12.6 metres. The Kormoran 1500 at 14.9 metres is listed from 2007 to 2014 and is the largest of the brand. None of the lines reaches recent build years. The type numbers roughly follow the length in centimetres.

Many Kormoran boats begin life in a hire fleet and pass into private hands later. That makes the service history worth reading closely: hire boats run many engine hours, see many different skippers and meet many lock walls. Look at fenders, rubbing strakes and bow areas, check the heating and the domestic water system, and ask for the engine log. On the plus side, these boats were built to be easy to handle on canals, rivers and lakes, with good visibility from the helm and generous living space.
