Linden; cover, cost and conditions

Linden Jachtbouw was a Dutch yard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, in South Holland. Piet Linden set it up in 1979 as a small yacht builder. Its name is tied above all to the Linden Kotter, a motor yacht drawn by Theo Gillissen and offered in several sizes. According to a Dutch yacht broker, the yard closed in 2010, when the economic crisis and cheaper competition came together. The boats themselves remain a regular sight on the used market. The series names give the stern away: a Spiegelkotter carries a flat transom, while a Spitsgatkotter ends in a pointed stern, both shapes with deep roots in Dutch boatbuilding.

Our model records hold 13 designs, all listed as motor yachts. The oldest are the four-digit Linden 1270, 1270 GL, 1350 and 1400, starting in 1995 and running until 2001 or 2002. The Kotter family follows: six Kotter models from the Kotter 11.00 o.k. at 11.2 metres to the Kotter 20.00 ok at 20.1 metres, plus the Spiegelkotter 14.50 and the Spitsgatkotter 13.70 and 15.00. The Kotter 13.70 has the longest run, with build years from 1997 to 2018. None of the designs reaches the most recent build years, and the last entries stop in 2018. Twelve of the 13 measure between eleven and 17 metres; only the Kotter 20.00 ok goes beyond that.

Every Linden for sale today is a used boat, often with several owners behind it. With the yard gone, much of the knowledge sits with brokers, surveyors and other owners, so a full survey and a complete set of papers matter more than usual. Yachts of this type are mostly used for relaxed cruising on rivers, canals and lakes, with the occasional trip along sheltered coasts. On an older Kotter, look at engine hours and service records, the condition of tanks, wiring and windows, and any signs of moisture around deck fittings. Ask which refits were done since the yard closed, and whether the original drawings and manuals are still with the boat.
