Worth knowing
Lytton; cover, cost and conditions
Lytton belongs to the world of British inland waterways. In 1978 the business was reformed and renamed Lytton Boat Building Ltd, and from then on it moulded and built its own boats. The first result was the Discovery 850, in essence an Elysian Super Sportsman under a new name, aimed at rivers and canals. The Elysian boats came from Appleyard Lincoln & Co of Ely, whose 27 ft hull stayed unchanged for years. The Super Sportsman had been built for speed with twin Volvo petrol engines. Lytton dropped those thirsty twins in favour of slow, economical diesels, and the brochure listed the BMC 1.5 as the only choice. A Discovery is easy to place by the lines of the Elysian hull and its leisurely, lock to lock character.
Our model records list three designs under the Lytton name: two motor yachts and one sailing boat. The Holiday Cruiser 850 is listed from 1975 to 1982 and the Discovery 850 from 1976 to 1983, both at 8.3 metres. The source ties the Discovery to the renaming in 1978, while our data shows it from build year 1976. Then there is the Holiday 18/590 at 5.9 metres, entered as a sailing boat and built from 1973 to 1982. No design runs into the most recent build years; production in our data ends with 1983. Every Lytton is therefore more than four decades old. Lengths run from 5.9 to 8.3 metres, with the two 850 models exactly level.
A river cruiser of this age is mostly about its engine and its systems. The BMC 1.5 diesel was common in British boats of the period, and parts and know-how can still be found, but a buyer should ask for service records, look for oil leaks and listen to it from cold. Check the shaft, the stern gland and the engine mounts, and lift the floorboards to see how dry the bilge is. Wiring on boats from the seventies has often been extended by several owners, so trace it back to the panel. Windows, canopies and their seals take a beating from years of sun and rain. Many of these boats have spent their lives on fresh water, which is kind to the hull.
