Marinette Yachts Inc; cover, cost and conditions
The Marinette is an American motor yacht built in aluminium by Aluminum Cruisers Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky. George Garcia, who ran the Falls City Flying Service, introduced the first Marinette in 1954, initially as a twin-hulled aluminium houseboat. The hulls were welded from an aluminium-magnesium alloy, chosen to avoid the corrosion that had troubled earlier craft built from copper-aluminium alloys. What came out of the shop were semi-planing hulls with a shallow chine angle, a broad beam and a flat transom, light enough to run economically on rivers and lakes as well as in salt water. The range took in express, sport fisherman, sedan and dual cabin layouts. Garcia sold the company in 1984, production carried on until 1991, and then Aluminum Cruisers was liquidated. John Althouse later acquired the rights, but no new boats are being built.
Our model records contain one design from the brand, the Marinette 45, a motor yacht of 13.8 metres. It is listed with build years from 1985 to 1991, which places it in the final years of production, and naturally it does not reach into recent build years. The encyclopaedia entry gives 26 to 44 feet for the series boats, so the 45 sits at the very top of the range and is the largest Marinette in our records. Anyone running a Marinette 45 today is looking after a yacht that has been afloat for well over three decades.
Aluminium hulls live or die by how well they are kept apart from other metals. On a used Marinette, look for pitting around through-hulls, shafts and stern gear, check that the anodes are fresh and that bronze or stainless fittings are properly isolated, and ask how the boat was wired, since stray current does quiet damage to aluminium. Paint should be checked for blistering that can hide corrosion underneath. Welds along the chines and transom deserve a close look as well. Engines and systems on a yacht of this age have often been replaced, so a list of what was renewed and when is worth asking for.
