Martin-Werft sits in Radolfzell on the western part of Lake Constance, with its sheds on the Mettnau peninsula. Joseph Martin founded it in 1931. His son Josef took over in 1974, at 24, after his father's early death, and today runs it as a family business with his wife Silke and son Sven. The yard builds in wood, either traditionally to classic lines by the old masters or cold-moulded to modern designs, including plans from Judel/Vrolijk. Its work spans rowing boats, motorboats and seagoing yachts up to 20 metres, many of them drawn by Josef Martin himself. Alongside new builds, the yard is known for restoring classic boats.

The Martinyacht at 12.16 metres starts in 1964 and runs until 1986, longer than any other line. From 1965 come the Kompaktkreuzer at 9.8 metres, built until 1980, and the Albacore II, the largest boat at 15 metres, built until 1976. On the sailing side the Seekreuzer 8,2 measures 8.2 metres and was built from 1965 to 1972, while the Nationaler Kreuzer 45er at 10.5 metres runs from 1989 to 1997, the latest entry. None reaches the recent build years, so every boat here is close to three decades old or more.
Wood rewards owners who stay ahead of it. Check planking and frames for soft spots, look at fastenings where they pass through the hull, and pay attention to the area around the engine bed on the motor yachts, where oil and heat age timber faster. A cold-moulded hull should be checked for delamination between the veneers. Varnish is not cosmetic on a wooden boat; it keeps water out. Many classics on Lake Constance spend the winter in a shed, which helps, but a buyer should still ask about past restorations and who carried them out. With a yard known for restoration work, original documentation may still be traceable.
