Menorquin Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Menorquin is a name from the Balearic island of Menorca. In 1978 Juan Sastre founded Astilleros Menorca with a clear idea: yachts modelled on the llaüt, the classic Mediterranean fishing boat. The first boats, called Conquistador, were eight metres long. A ten metre llaüt followed in 1985, and in 1997 came a Menorquin Yacht of 13 metres. In 2001 Juan Sastre handed over to Jose Luis Sastre, and the yachts grew to between 16 and 18 metres. Sasga Yachts was formally established in 2010, when the Menorquin 42 was built, and the company is based in San Luis on Menorca. The fishing boat lines remain the thread that runs through the range.
Our model records list 13 designs: eleven motor yachts and two motorboats. The oldest entry is the Cape Ador V at 8.5 metres, listed from 1984 to 1990. The Gama range includes the 36 Gama Cabinado, 40 Gama Solarium and 45 Gama Cabinado, and the 36, at seven metres, is the smallest boat of the brand. The 45 Lux and the 55 date from the nineties. The larger yachts carry three-digit numbers: 100 Yacht Open and Weelhouse, 110 Yacht Weelhouse, 120 Yacht Open and Weelhouse, 145 Yacht and the 150 Yacht at 15.31 metres. The 36 Gama Cabinado and 40 Gama Solarium had the longest runs, both until 2022, and the 120 Yacht Open lasted until 2019. None reaches the most recent build years.
A llaüt-style boat is made for unhurried days: a slow run along the coast, lunch at anchor in a cala, back to port in the evening. On a used Menorquin the condition of the woodwork deserves a careful look, as do the engine mounts, the shaft and the stern gear, since boats of this age may have spent decades in strong sun. Ask for the service history of the engine and check the hull for osmosis on older units. Wheelhouse versions offer shelter for shoulder season trips, while the open layouts suit warm summer days.
