Miedema; cover, cost and conditions
Miedema was a yard in Kootstertille, a village in the Dutch province of Friesland on what is now the Prinses Margriet Canal. It built mainly steel motor yachts for inland cruising, known as the Tille-Kruiser or Miedema Kruiser. A surviving boat from 1975 shows the recipe: a steel hull, teak deck, wooden superstructure and toughened glass in aluminium frames. The names point home, Tille standing for Kootstertille, and the number after Tille-Kruiser gives the length in centimetres, so the 1050 is about 10.5 metres.
Our model records list 19 Miedema designs, 18 motor yachts and one sailing boat, the Tillebrasser 25. Seven carry the village name: Tille-Kruiser 800, 1050 and 1500, Tillekruiser and Tillekruiser 1200, the Tille Kotter 125 and the Tillebrasser. Four belong to the Vitessa range (26, 30-Jet, 31 and 36), and the Adria, Alu Speed, Caranan, Mieko, Stormmeeuw, Stormvogel, Waterduivel and Miedema 17,60 make up the rest. Build years run from 1965 to 1979. Sizes stretch from the 7.6 metre Tillebrasser 25 to the 25 metre Adria.
Every Miedema afloat today is close to fifty years old, so the steel matters most: a recent survey with plate thickness readings tells a buyer more than any brochure. These are canal and lake boats, happiest on a sheltered berth, and a regular check of the bilges and the paint below the waterline keeps rust in hand.
