Seaward; cover, cost and conditions
Seaward Boats is a British yard set up by Barry Kimber in 1980. Kimber developed semi-displacement motor boats in the tradition of the Nelson designs, and the family likeness is easy to spot: a high, strong bow, a classic wheelhouse and a hull drawn for rough water rather than outright speed. In 2002 the business moved to Cowes on the Isle of Wight, and it is now owned by The Boat Development Company Ltd. Over the years the range has run from the Seaward 23 up to boats of around 42 feet, and the 23 even has its own owners' club, the Seaward Squadron, which holds rallies every season.
Our model records hold one Seaward design, the Seaward 23 motor cruiser at 7.1 metres, listed with build years from 2003 to 2009. Its lines go back to TT Boat Designs, and it sleeps up to four people. What sets it apart is the large, deep cockpit together with an open backed wheelhouse, a layout that suits family cruising and weekends away. Many owners come to it from sailing, looking for a motor boat that handles the sea in a similar spirit. One point to watch: a sailing boat called Seaward 23 was also built in Florida by a different company.
A Seaward 23 is a glass fibre boat meant to be used in all sorts of weather, so a buyer should look at how it has been used rather than at the year alone. Check the engine hours and service records, the shaft and stern gear, the steering and the condition of the wheelhouse windows and their seals. Water in the bilge or soft patches around deck fittings deserve a closer look. Boats from the Isle of Wight yard are at home in the Solent and along the English Channel coast, and owners often take them on to sheltered estuaries and inland waters.
