Sillinger builds inflatable boats and rigid inflatables in France. The works are at Mer in the Loir-et-Cher department on the Loire and have been running since 1962; the founder was Tibor Sillinger, a self taught entrepreneur of Hungarian origin. The weight of the range sits with boats for hard use: rescue services, intervention units, public authorities and commercial users. You recognise them by the very substantial tube with its several separate chambers, the deep vee hull and the plain functional console. The SRD range is a particular case: a folding boat that can be made ready in around forty five seconds.

Our model records list 65 Sillinger models, 46 of them rigid inflatables and 19 soft inflatables. Build years start in 1995 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded: the Proraid models from 380 to 765, the SRD models from 380 to 525, the Rafale range from 950 to 1200 and special models such as the 765 AirShark and the 765 Amphibie. From earlier years come the UM models 240, 280 and 330. Lengths run from 2.4 to 15.5 metres, half the models between 4.3 and 7.7 metres. The number gives the length in centimetres.

Boats built for rescue and intervention work lead a different life from private ones. They are driven hard, often loaded, often at night, and their tubes carry several separate chambers precisely because the boat is expected to keep floating after one of them fails. How a particular boat is actually used therefore says more about it than its length does.
