Skua Ribs; cover, cost and conditions
Skua Ribs is a British make of rigid inflatable boats. It belongs to Nitec UK Ltd, a company that also builds a second line under the Ribquest name. The Skua range is short: two boats which, according to a published test, share the same hull of around six metres. The difference lies on deck. The RB6 sets out to combine a yacht tender with a sports RIB and comes richly equipped, while the SK6 is pared back, with conventional jockey seats in a row and more open deck to work and move around on. Navigation electronics and hydraulic steering came as standard. A Skua is recognised less by its hull than by the way console and seating are arranged.
Our model records list two designs, both marked R.I.B, a rigid hulled inflatable. The SK6 is listed from 2008 to 2018 at 6 metres, the RB6 from 2009 to 2017 at 5.5 metres. Neither line reaches the most recent build years, and the whole production span runs to just over ten years. The youngest boats are now around eight years old, the oldest close to twenty. Buying a Skua therefore means buying second hand, often privately and frequently together with a trailer and an outboard. The lengths stay within a narrow band, so either boat sits comfortably on an ordinary road trailer.
A RIB lives or dies by its tubes. Check seams, valves and the rubbing strake for wear, and leave the tubes pumped up overnight to see whether they hold pressure. Sun is the main enemy, so shading the tubes when the boat is ashore pays off. Hydraulic steering should feel firm without air in the system, and the transom around the outboard bolts deserves a close look. On the trailer, rollers and the winch strap take a lot of strain from regular launching. A used Skua that has been stored in the shade and rinsed after salt water will usually show it straight away.
