Steijn; cover, cost and conditions

Steijn, often listed by brokers as van Steijn, was a Dutch yard in Zoeterwoude near Leiden. Under the Lowland and Fantasia names it built motor yachts in the classic Dutch way during the sixties and seventies: hard chine steel hulls, teak decks and superstructure, teak joinery inside and in some cases two steering positions. They are displacement boats for rivers, canals and inland lakes, made for long trips through locks and along quiet waterways. The Fantasia number gives the length in centimetres, while the Lowland boats carry names such as Kotter, Kutter, Princess and Special.

Our model records list ten Steijn motor yachts. The Fantasia line has four: the 870 OK at 8.7 metres, the 950 at 9.5, the 1080 at 10.8 and the 1100 D.S. at 10.91 metres. Five carry the Lowland name, from the 10.45 metre Super Lowland through the Kutter, Princess and Special to the 14.85 metre Lowland Kotter, the largest model. The 13.5 metre Rijnstreek III completes the list. Build years run from 1965, when the Fantasia 950 starts, to 1981.

A Steijn yacht is a slow, steady boat for inland waters, built to be lived on for weeks at a time. Steel hulls of this age need regular thickness checks and good antifouling, and teak decks want attention before leaks reach the steel below.
