Sunyacht Concept, now trading as SYC Gawlowski, is based in Velten just north of Berlin. Owner Jedrzej Gawlowski has been developing and building solar powered craft since 1992: small cruising boats, houseboats, motorboats, water taxis and passenger vessels. The boats carry the SYC badge, often followed by the length in millimetres, so an SYC 4200 is 4.2 metres long. Alongside come names such as Pelikan, Soleil, Koi or Zofia and job titles like Shuttle, Taxiboot or AquaBus.
Our model records list 28 models: 17 motor yachts, eight motorboats and three motor catamarans. Build years run from 2011 to 2027, and 17 models are still in production. Lengths range from 4.2 to just under 20 metres, with half of them between 9.1 and 13.6 metres. The smallest are the SYC 4200 versions Idee, Laura and Soli at 4.2 metres. Scampi, Koi, Soleil, Pelikan and Solina sit between 9.1 and 10.5 metres, the Shuttles at 11.2 and 13.6, Family, Octopus and Zofia up to 14.95. The SYC 70 and AquaBus reach almost 20 metres, and Family and Soleil also come as catamarans.
Solar boats glide quietly across lakes and canals, carry passengers on inland waters or serve as floating holiday homes. Much of their value sits in the technology rather than the hull: the solar panels, the battery bank, charge controllers and electric motor. Battery age and capacity are the key questions with a used boat, followed by the state of the panels and the wiring.
