How the place works

From July to October typhoons run northeast along Japan's southern coast, often several a month. The coast is steep and the harbours are good, but they are built for fishing and not for yachts wanting to sit out a storm.

What breaks there

In season it is the typhoon at the berth, and damage comes from swell inside the basin and from boats breaking loose. Out of season the coast is a pleasant cruising ground with heavy traffic in the straits.

What this means for your policy

Settle the blackout period and the accepted berth for the typhoon season. In Japan that usually means hauling the boat out, because a berth in harbour is not enough in a direct hit.
