Hazard spot

Bay of Lübeck

Onshore northeasterlies push water into the bay and the level rises quickly in autumn gales. Boats in box berths then slam against piles and pontoons.

How the place works

The bay opens to the northeast, and that is exactly where the autumn gales come from. Onshore wind pushes water in that cannot drain away: with a sustained northeasterly the level at Travemünde and Neustadt rises by a metre and more, with no tide involved.

What breaks there

When the water rises above pontoon height, boats hang in their lines and lift out of the berth, or they land on the pontoon as it falls. The second group is surge damage to covers and sprayhoods, because the sea reaches into the sheltered basins.

What this means for your policy

Here the berth is the place of risk, not the passage. Check whether the policy includes storm surge and water level damage at the berth, and whether it requires lines to be set long enough when high water is forecast.
