AM Plaisance; cover, cost and conditions

AM Plaisance stands in our records for the Tricat trimarans from Brittany. The yard was set up in 2003 to build and sell the Tricat 22, a sporty trimaran whose design dates back to 1988. It was based in Sené from 2003 to 2011 and now works from Plescop in the Morbihan. The signature of every Tricat is the folding float: on the Tricat 6.90 the floats fold horizontally in about a minute, and the Tricat 8.50 is 2.50 metres wide on the road and spreads to 6.50 metres on the water. That turns a multihull into a boat that travels by trailer from one sailing area to the next.

Our model records list eight designs: seven trimarans and the Tricat 20 at 5.99 metres, which is classed as a sailing catamaran. Build years run from 2005 to the present, and four lines reach into the most recent years: the Tricat 20, 25, 30 and 8.50. The range opens with the Tricat 22 and Tricat 23.5 at 6.8 and 7.11 metres, both listed from 2005 to 2018. From 2010 came the Tricat 25 at 7.7 metres and the Tricat L'Access 6, at 5.77 metres the smallest boat. The Tricat 30 at 9.2 metres has been the largest since 2013. Newer still are the Tricat 6.90 at 6.9 metres, listed from 2020 to 2024, and the Tricat 8.50 at 8.5 metres from 2022. Six of the eight boats stay under eight metres.

A folding trimaran lives on its trailer, and the folding system is the first thing to check on a used one. Work the arms through their full travel, look for play in the hinges and pins, and inspect the beams and float attachments for cracks or stress marks. The trailer itself, with its brakes, lights and bearings, deserves the same care as the boat. Light multihulls are sensitive to weight and cruising gear piles up quickly, so it is worth checking what has been added over the years. Sails and rig on a fast boat work hard, and the age of the sail wardrobe tells its own story. A short sail in a breeze shows whether the boat tracks and tacks as it should.

What this means for the cover

As the Tricat 20, Tricat 25, Tricat 30 by AM Plaisance and 1 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Tricat 6.90, Tricat L'Access 6,

Tricat 22 by AM Plaisance and 1 more series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Tricat 20 by AM Plaisance series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

For the Tricat 25, Tricat 30, Tricat 8.50 by AM Plaisance and further series:

On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point,

on folding models the mechanism as well.
