NEEL Trimarans; cover, cost and conditions
In La Rochelle, NEEL builds cruising trimarans: three hulls, one engine, one rudder. In insurance terms that is a category of its own, not simply a catamaran with an extra hull. The single engine in the centre hull halves the maintenance effort compared with a catamaran and with it a whole cluster of claims; the two floats, by contrast, are exposed, slender components that are hit first in a collision and when berthing.
With a trimaran the berth is the main practical issue, and it has an insurance side. At ten to eleven metres in beam a NEEL does not fit into every box, and many owners lie at hammerhead berths or mooring buoys, more exposed than in a box and with more movement on the boat in a storm. State the type of berth in the application; it feeds into the assessment and prevents discussions if storm damage occurs at the berth.
The floats bring a second point with them: on most model ranges they are fixed, not foldable, and therefore more laborious to handle during craning and in winter storage. Our policy expressly includes hauling out, launching, craning and the stay ashore. Use this cover deliberately and have craning work carried out by yards experienced with multihulls; the most frequent craning damage arises from wrongly placed slings.

Is a trimaran more expensive to insure than a catamaran?
Not as a matter of principle. The single engine lowers the machinery risk, the exposed floats raise the collision risk. What remains decisive is value, length and cruising range.
Is craning damage during launching and hauling out covered?
Yes, launching and craning are included in our hull insurance. Have the work carried out by a yard with multihull experience; wrongly placed slings are the most frequent cause.

On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point, on folding models the mechanism as well.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
