Bonwitco Boat Builders is based at Totnes in Devon, on the River Dart in the south west of England. The manufacturers list kept by the Broads Authority, which looks after the Norfolk Broads, describes the firm as building a range of launches and dinghies. Seven types appear there, from the Bonwitco 200 at 3.1 metres to the 475 and 480 open boats at 4.8 metres, plus a 449 with a closed cabin. In our records several of these boats are filed under the name With, such as the With 200, With 400 and With 480, which the Broads list shows as Bonwitco 200, 400 and 480. We found no reliable founding date.

Our model records list nine designs, all filed as motorboats. The oldest are the With 200 and With 400 from 1971, followed by the With 400 C from 1973 and the With 450 from 1974. The With 480 is recorded from 1987 to 1993. The nineties brought the Bonwitco 320, 385 and 475 and the With 375, which with build years up to 2017 runs the longest. The smallest boat is the With 200 at 3.19 metres, the largest are the With 450 and With 480 at 4.8 metres each. No design reaches into the most recent build years, so almost every Bonwitco on the market has a few decades behind it.

A small launch or dinghy of this age is simple to keep but worth checking with care. Look at the transom where the outboard bracket is fixed, at the bow eye and the keel band, and at any wooden seats or rubbing strakes for rot. Many of these boats live on trailers, so the trailer's bearings, lights and winch matter as much as the hull. On rivers such as the Dart or the Broads they are used for pottering, fishing and short trips, and an older boat that has been kept indoors will usually be in far better shape.
