Boote Schmalzl is a family yard in Carinthia, in southern Austria. It began in 1959, when Ernst Schmalzl, then 30 years old, founded Möve-Bootsbau on the Ossiacher See. His son Wolfgang took over in 1972 and modernised the business, and Paul Schmalzl joined as the third generation in 2016. The company now works from three sites: Velden on the Wörthersee, the Ossiacher See with its marina and moorings, and Lind ob Velden with a workshop and storage hall. Besides building its own boat, the yard sells electric, sailing and motor boats and restores classics. The province of Carinthia has given it an innovation award.

It is the yard's own development, an electric runabout whose lines were inspired by an old water taxi already at work on the Wörthersee in 1947. The hull is glassfibre made by vacuum infusion, the deck is moulded plywood with mahogany veneer, and the bathing platform is teak and mahogany. A three-phase motor drives a shaft, with 4.3, 20 or 50 kW to choose from. With a beam of 1.75 metres the boat is approved for six people.
The Julika combines a modern hull with a lot of wood, and the wood sets the care routine. Mahogany veneer and varnish dislike strong sun, so a canvas in the season and a dry hall in winter pay off, and a light sanding and fresh coat whenever the varnish turns dull keeps water out of the plywood. The electric drive is quiet and needs little routine work, but on a used boat the state of the batteries, the charger and the shaft seal deserves a close look. Lake boats like this usually see short, calm trips, so engine hours tell less than the condition of the woodwork.
