Browning Aerocraft Marine/Aerocraft; cover, cost and conditions
Browning Aerocraft, often listed simply as Aerocraft, was an American maker of sport boats and is no longer in production. Its boats date from the seventies and early eighties and today turn up mainly as used boats and restoration projects. The Mustang models are fibreglass tri-hulls, whose three part bow gives stability and room up front in calm water, and the Mustang I has a walk-through windshield. The Montego is a bowrider with open seating in the bow. The names give the boats away: Mustang, Mach, Malibu, Monte Carlo.
Our model records list nine designs, all motorboats: three families and three single models. They are the Mustang I, II and III, the Mach II C, Mach II R and Mach III, and the Malibu, Monte Carlo and Montego. Build years start in 1973, except for the Malibu in 1974 and the Mach II C and II R in 1975. The Mustangs end in 1980 and 1981, the Mach models and the Malibu in 1982, the Monte Carlo in 1985 and the Montego in 1986. Lengths run from 4.7 metres for the Montego to 6.71 metres for the Mach III, with five models under 5.5 metres.
These are trailer boats under seven metres, launched at the ramp for a day on the lake or a calm coast. At forty years and more, transom, stringers and floor deserve a check for soft spots, and the trailer needs the same care as the boat. Many owners repower with a newer outboard.
