Worth knowing
CIM Shipyard; cover, cost and conditions
CIM Shipyard was a French yard on the Atlantic coast, linked in brokerage papers with Rochefort sur Mer and La Rochelle. It built sailing yachts of a size more often seen as one-off projects. Its most familiar design is the Maxi 88, an ocean cruiser drawn by the American design office Sparkman & Stephens. In a marina the Maxi 88 stands out through its long, classic sheer and the hydraulic platform at the stern, which lifts the tender and turns into a swimming platform at anchor. These are cruising yachts for long passages, laid out with several cabins and a diesel engine of their own.
Our model records list three designs, all of them sailing yachts. The Maxi 88 has the longest production span, with build years from 1976 to 2005, and measures 29.7 metres. The Scorpio 100 Classic shares that length; like the Maxi 78 it starts in 1996 and ends in 2005. At 24.3 metres the Maxi 78 is the smallest design of the yard. None of the three lines reaches into recent build years, so every boat on the market today is at least two decades old. Two of the three sit just below 30 metres, and even the smallest is well over 20.
A yacht of this size lives with a professional maintenance plan. Standing rigging and the mast step want regular inspection, and on a boat close to 30 metres the hydraulic systems, from the stern platform to winches and steering, need a skilled engineer. Anyone looking at a used Maxi should ask for the rig history, the survey of the hull and keel bolts and the service records of the diesel. Many of these yachts have spent years in charter or on long cruises, so the state of the interior joinery tells a lot about how they were kept.
