Clark Boats; cover, cost and conditions

The Clark Boat Company was a family business in Kent, Washington. Bob Clark moved there with his family in 1960 to build boats in fibreglass, and the first hull to carry the Clark label was a Lightning, one of the earliest made in that material. OK dinghies, 505s and the Star keelboat followed before the San Juan range made the name. The sons helped out, and Dennis opened his own sail loft in 1971. A second plant on the east coast, in New Bern, North Carolina, came in 1972. In spring 1984 the family sold the company to San Juan Manufacturing, and after that group went bankrupt the moulds and rights were split between a west coast and an east coast group.

Our model records hold one Clark design, the San Juan 24, listed as a sailing boat of 7.35 metres with build years from 1971 to 1979. Bruce Kirby, the man behind the Laser, drew her as a Quarter Ton racer under the IOR. Wikipedia gives 1973 as the start of production, so the earlier year in our data is worth checking against the papers of any given boat. She has a beam of about 2.4 metres, a draft of about 1.2 metres, a fixed fin keel, a masthead sloop rig and an outboard on the transom. Those limits kept her on the road behind a car and helped her move from the race course into family sailing. She was built in fibreglass with wooden trim.

A San Juan 24 on the market today is close to fifty years old, so the survey matters more than the brochure. Check the keel bolts and the hull around the fin, the chainplates and the deck around fittings, where water can creep in over the decades. The wooden trim wants oil or varnish, and the outboard bracket deserves a firm shake. Many owners still trail the boat to lakes and coastal waters, so the trailer, its brakes and lights are part of the purchase. Sails from the racing days are often tired, and a fresh suit makes a visible difference.
