Worth knowing
Columbia Yacht; cover, cost and conditions
Columbia Yachts came out of Costa Mesa, California. The company started life as Glas Laminates, set up by Dick Valdes and Morey Threinen to mould fibreglass parts, and only later turned to sailboats. It took the Columbia name with the Columbia 29, drawn by Sparkman & Stephens. Columbia was among the early American yards building fibreglass sailboats in series, with plants in California and Virginia and licensed production in Canada, Australia and at Yamaha in Japan. The number after the name is roughly the length in feet, so the 26 is a 7.8 metre boat and the 57 just over 17 metres.
Our model records list nine Columbia designs, all of them sailing yachts: the 26, 28, 30, 34, 39, 43, 45, 52 and 57. The Columbia 43 opens the list with build year 1967. Almost every line ends in 1976 or 1977; the Columbia 34 alone runs on to 1988. Five boats measure between 7.8 and 12 metres, from the 26 through the 28, 30 and 34 to the 39. Four are larger: the 43 at 13.2, the 45 at 13.8, the 52 at 15.85 and the 57 at 17.22 metres.
A Columbia today is a boat of around fifty years, and its condition says more than its badge. Owners look at chainplates, deck core and rudder bearings, and many boats carry a replacement engine. The smaller models are easy to handle on a home mooring, while the 43 and up were built as cruising yachts with room for long passages. A winter ashore with the mast down gives the old laminate and fittings time to dry out.
