Worth knowing
Compass Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Compass Yachts Ltd. was a New Zealand yard that no longer exists. Its own signature design is the Compass 28, drawn by Gunter Heuchmer and Don Lees: a glassfibre masthead sloop with a long keel and more than half of its weight in ballast. It was built for New Zealand waters, and most of the boats are still found there. Compass also built designs by Bruce Farr, among them the Farr 1104. Boats of this type from the yard, such as Farr Out, launched in 1976, and Farr Fetched, launched in 1977, took part in the Sydney to Hobart race. A Compass 28 is easy to recognise by its long, continuous keel.
Our model records list three sailing yachts. The Compass 28 measures 8.6 metres and appears from 1967 to 1989, while the Compass 29 comes in at 8.77 metres with build years from 1971 to 1984. The largest is the Farr 1104 at 11.04 metres, entered from 1973 to 1992. Together the three span some 25 years, from the late sixties to the early nineties. Two boats stay under nine metres, one goes beyond eleven. None reaches into the most recent build years, and the youngest boat is more than three decades old. The spread shows both sides of the yard: the sturdy long keel cruiser and the faster offshore racing design.
Any Compass today is an older boat, so condition is everything. On the long keel Compass 28, check the keel bolts or encapsulated ballast for rust weeping and the rudder for play in its bearings. Older glassfibre decks can grow soft around stanchions and fittings where water has crept into the core. A Farr 1104 that raced offshore may have a tired rig, so look at chainplates, spreader roots and standing rigging age. Many of these boats were built for the southern Pacific and still sail there; one brought to Europe will need paperwork for import and a careful survey.
