Construction Navale de Bordeaux; cover, cost and conditions
Construction Navale de Bordeaux was set up in 1987 on the right bank of the Garonne at Bordeaux by Olivier Lafourcade and Dieter Gust. At first it built large sailing yachts in aluminium; since 1992 it has belonged to a French boatbuilding group, and from 1994 motorboats were added. Since 2019 the Bordeaux site has been given over entirely to large multihulls, while the building of the large monohulls moved elsewhere. You recognise the sailing yachts by the very long straight waterline, the low deckhouse and the tall slender rig.
Our model records list 47 models from this yard: 33 sailing yachts, eleven cabin sailing catamarans and three motor yachts. Build years start in 1987 and run into current production. Forty seven series are recorded: the CNB cruising yachts 64, 66 and 76, the one off builds 76 Grand Bleu, 82 Simeron, 86 Spiip, 94, 95 Grand Bleu Vintage and 100 Chrisco, the Bordeaux 60, the Excess catamarans in 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, and the motor yachts 39.5, 40.1 and 43.2, whose numbers give the length in metres. Lengths run from 11.1 to 55 metres, half the models between 21.3 and 31.6 metres.
This is really two fleets under one name. The Excess catamarans are series boats in the familiar size range, built in numbers and comparable with each other. The large monohulls and the one off builds are a different matter: at that scale each boat has its own history, its own inventory and its own refit record, and none of it can be read off a model name.

As the CNB 66, CNB 76, Excess 14 by Construction Navale de Bordeaux and 2 more series are still in
production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Excess 15, Excess 12, CNB Bordeaux 60 by Construction Navale de Bordeaux and 38 more
series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the CNB Frers 76 by Construction Navale de Bordeaux series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the CNB 66, CNB 76, CNB Bordeaux 60 by Construction Navale de Bordeaux and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Excess 14, Excess 11, Excess 13 by Construction Navale de Bordeaux and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the CNB 40.1, CNB 43.2, CNB 39.5 MY by Construction Navale de Bordeaux series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
