Container Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Container Yachts of Middletown, Rhode Island, built a boat around one idea: it fits inside an ordinary shipping container. Bernie Blum founded the company, and Robert H. Perry drew the design. The result is a motorsailer a little over twelve metres long but only about 2.3 metres wide, with a hard-chine hull, a bulbed fin keel, a spade rudder, a saildrive and a raised pilothouse. For shipping, keel and rudder come off and the boat stands upright in the box. At the far end a yard bolts them back on and steps the mast. The prototype was cold-moulded in wood and epoxy at Schooner Creek; production boats were laid up in glassfibre by SAS-Vektor in Zadar, Croatia.

Our model records hold exactly one design for Container Yachts, the Far Harbour 39 motorsailer. It is listed for build years 2002 to 2022 and measures 11.87 metres. No other lines of the brand appear. The build period spans two decades but stops short of the most recent years. Because the prototype and the production boats were built in different ways, it is worth asking of any example whether it is the wood and epoxy hull or a glassfibre boat from Croatia.

A boat designed to be shipped will often have been taken apart and put back together more than once. A buyer should look closely at the keel joint and the keel bolts, the rudder fitting and the mast step, all of which have been through container trips. The narrow beam makes for a long, easily driven hull under power, but it also means headroom and storage are tight. The saildrive needs its diaphragm and anodes checked on schedule. Owners tend to use these boats for long distance cruising in faraway waters, so ask where the boat has been.

Far Harbour 39

Far Harbour 39 is a sailing yacht from Container Yachts, built from 2002 to 2022.

What this means for the cover

For the Far Harbour 39 by Container Yachts series the market value and the replacement cost often

differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Far Harbour 39 by Container Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
