Egret Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Egret Boats was set up in Florida in the early 1990s to build boats for fishing in skinny water, the flats boats of the American south. For more than two decades production ran in Washington, North Carolina. In 2024 new owners based in St. Augustine took over, and the boats are once again built in Florida. Under the previous owner, Frank Afshari, the range grew from two boats, a 16 foot and an 18 foot flats boat, to seven designs. The Egret 189 is built from carbon fibre, Kevlar and vinylester resin with vacuum bagging, and is known for a quiet ride and a draft of only ten to eleven inches. Like most flats boats, the smaller Egrets have a low, open deck and a platform aft for poling across shallow lagoons.

Our model records list five designs, all motorboats, and all five run into the most recent build years. The earliest entry is the Egret 306 from 2006, followed by the Egret 167 and Egret 189 in 2007 and the Egret 2011 and Egret 290 in 2011. The smallest is the Egret 167 at 5.09 metres, then the Egret 189 at 5.73 metres and the Egret 2011 at 6.38 metres. Clearly larger are the Egret 290 at 8.84 metres and the Egret 306 at 9.3 metres. The range therefore splits into three compact boats between five and six and a half metres and two boats around nine metres.

A flats boat lives a hard life in salt water and on the trailer. On a used Egret, check the trailer bunks and axle for corrosion, rinse marks around the motor bracket and the condition of any poling platform and its fixings. The outboard hours and service record matter as much as the hull. Composite layups with carbon and Kevlar are stiff and light, but repairs after a hard grounding call for someone who knows those materials. Electronics such as sonar, trolling motor and plotter are often added by owners, so it is worth listing what stays with the boat.
