Espevaer is a steel boatbuilder from the Dutch province of Friesland. The German magazine Boote counts it among the less familiar names in Dutch steel boatbuilding and notes that the boats are sold through dealers in the region. Hull and deck are steel, and power comes from a diesel on a shaft: the Espevaer 28 has a 39 hp Yanmar as standard, with a 54 hp unit as an option. According to the yard, an experienced team develops the designs and each boat can be tailored to its owner. The 28 shows the classic layout for two: a seat and berth in the bow, a wet room, a galley with dinette and a cockpit aft. It carries CE category C, which suits canals, rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
Our model records list four Espevaer designs, two motorboats and two motor yachts. The Espevaer 28, 8.4 metres long, runs from 2004 to 2018 and is the longest-lived line. The Espevaer 32 measures 9.6 metres, was built from 2005 to 2013 and is the largest of the four. From 2012 two open boats joined: the 22 Open Sloep at 6.6 metres and the 288 Tender at 8.65 metres, both listed until 2018. None of the designs reaches into recent build years in our data, and the latest entry is 2018. It is a compact range, with lengths spanning exactly three metres.
Steel is forgiving in a lock but not of neglect. On a used Espevaer the places to look are where water sits: under deck fittings, along the rubbing strake, in the bilge beneath the engine and around the stern gland. Blistered paint on steel usually means rust has started underneath, and an ultrasonic thickness survey of the plating tells more than any brochure. A shaft drive with a small diesel is simple to maintain, so service records for the Yanmar and the cutless bearing are worth asking for. Because the yard built to customer wishes, two boats of the same type can differ inside, and the inventory should be checked item by item. Most of these boats spend their lives on inland water, which is gentle on the hull, but air draft and low bridges then matter.
