Farrier Marine is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, and builds trimarans to the designs of Ian Farrier, who lived from 1947 to 2017. At the heart of every boat is his folding system: there are no hinges in the beams or at the critical joint between beam and float, yet one person can change the overall beam in a matter of seconds. Farrier applied for the patent in 1973 and it was granted in 1975; the first prototype had been launched in Australia in 1974. Folded, the boats become narrow enough for a road trailer. Hulls are built in glassfibre, some designs in carbon and epoxy, and several were also offered as kits for amateur builders.
Our model records list three designs, all of them cabin trimarans. The Farrier F 82 R appears from 2002 to 2012 at 8.2 metres; the F-82 series replaced the earlier F-25, and the R marks the racing version. The F-9 RX is the longest boat in the list at 9.45 metres and is recorded from 2014 to 2018. The Farrier F-22 at seven metres starts in 2014 and is the only one of the three that runs into the latest build years; the first production float for it was finished in December 2010. All three sit between seven and nine and a half metres.
Owning a folding trimaran means looking after the folding gear. The beams, their pivots and the locking pins carry big loads under sail, so they deserve a careful look for cracks and wear before every season. Trailer sailors should check the trailer as closely as the boat, from bearings and brakes to the bunks that support the main hull. On a used Farrier, ask whether it came from the yard or from a kit, and get a surveyor who knows multihulls to inspect the joints between hull and beams and any carbon parts. Boats that have been raced hard may come with tired sails and a well used rig.
