Foiling World; cover, cost and conditions
Foiling World is the English brand behind the F101, a small trimaran that flies above the water on hydrofoils. Foiling World handles the marketing and works closely with designer Ron Price and with White Formula, the English yard that builds the boat. Selden supplies the mast, Harken the hardware and Hyde Sails the sails. The stated aim is to open foiling to sailors who thought it was beyond them. The F101 is easy to recognise: three slim hulls, a two-piece carbon mast and T-shaped foils on centreboard and rudder that can be lifted clear of the water.
Our model records list one design, the Foiling F101 as a trimaran of 5.4 metres. It is listed from 2013 and reaches into the most recent build years. The boat is built entirely in carbon and weighs only about 80 kilograms ready to sail, with a beam of 2.55 metres. The mainsail measures 8.5 square metres and the gennaker 7 square metres. It can be sailed single-handed or by two, with a crew weight of 70 to 120 kilograms in mind. Depending on that weight it lifts onto its foils in around eight knots of wind. The mast splits for transport, and the foils retract for launching and lock down for sailing.
A carbon foiler rewards careful handling ashore as much as on the water. The foil tips and front edges are the first things to suffer from a knock on the slipway, so inspect them for chips and delamination before every session. The lifting mechanism and its locks need to be clean and free of sand. Carbon hulls should be checked for cracks around the beam joints after a hard nosedive. Store the sails rolled, not folded. When buying used, ask about crashes and repairs, and look at the foil cases and the rudder gantry for stress marks.
