H-14 is a Polish workshop building rigid inflatable boats, and it describes itself as artisan and inventive. Most of what it builds is aimed at sailing: coach boats for instructors and trainers, support boats and mark layers for regattas. A sailing club on Lake Garda shows the boats in a dedicated showroom. The AX line is easy to pick out by its high bow, which meets the waves, and its broad stern, which gives stability and room on board. The number in the name roughly matches the length, so the AX 635 measures 6.35 metres and the AX 500 just under five. For coaching that means a boat that stays close to the fleet when the breeze builds.

Our model records list five designs, all RIBs of the AX line, and all five reach into the most recent build years. First came the AX 500 at 4.95 metres in 2013, followed a year later by the AX 635 at 6.35 metres, the largest boat. Three more joined in 2015: the AX 500+, which has bigger tubes than the AX 500 on the same length, the AX 560 at 5.62 metres, built on the 500+ pattern but larger, and the AX 580 at 5.93 metres, narrower and with a lower bow than the 560. The AX 500+ is meant for sailing schools, coaches and mark layers and travels easily on a trailer, while the AX 635 has room for film crews and photographers.

Coach boats lead a hard life. They are launched and hauled out daily, nudge against dinghies and committee boats and often spend summers in the hands of several instructors. On a used H-14, check the tube seams and valves, the bond between tube and hull and the rubbing strake. Look at the transom around the engine mounting bolts and at the keel strip, which wears on slipways. Ask how many hours the outboard has run and when its water pump was last changed. The trailer deserves a look too, from rollers and winch to bearings and lights. A club boat with a logbook is easier to judge than one without any history.
