HIFEI; cover, cost and conditions

HIFEI builds inflatable boats and rigid inflatables at Weihai on the east coast of China. The range runs from a plain inflatable with a slatted floor through rigid inflatables with a fibreglass hull to boats with a welded aluminium hull, alongside inflatable stand up paddle boards. You recognise them by the plain shapes without applied trim, the fully rounded tube ends and the console that sits on the centreline on the larger ranges rather than against the side.

Our model records list 100 HIFEI models, 51 of them rigid inflatables, 45 soft inflatables and four watersports craft. Build years start in 2006 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded, 36 laid out for engine power and 24 recorded as inflatables without their own drive. The core comprises the Dolphin range from 320 to 420, the HFP range from 220 to 330 and the HHA and HHB ranges from 420 upwards. Lengths run from 1.6 to 7.5 metres, half the models between 2.6 and 4.2 metres.

The model number gives the length in centimetres, so a Dolphin 420 is around 4.2 metres. On a boat of that size the engine is often worth more than the hull, which is the single most useful thing to note about the type. The tube ages through sunlight and abrasion rather than impact, while a welded aluminium hull dents where a fibreglass one would crack, so the two halves of the boat wear on different clocks.
