Italcantieri; cover, cost and conditions
Italcantieri was a state owned shipbuilder in Monfalcone on the Gulf of Trieste. In 1959 it launched Bora as its own brand for pleasure boats, starting with a model called the Borino, and every model in our data carries that name. The Bora 103 sums up the range: a fibreglass boat of just over ten metres with a flybridge, two cabins and generous deck space. A factory flybridge was almost unheard of in Italy at the time, when most were added later along American lines. Some numbers give the length in decimetres, such as the 8.5 metre Bora 85 and the 10.3 metre Bora 103.
Our records list ten Bora models, nine motor yachts and one motorboat, the 6.7 metre Bora Junior. Build years run from 1964 for the Junior to 1977 for the Bora 103. Alongside the Junior, 85 and 103 come the Bora 3 and 4, the GT and G.T.S. at 8.2 metres each, the 8 metre Sportsman and the two largest types, the Maior at 11.4 and the Maior S at 12.05 metres. Six models sit between 6.7 and 9.05 metres, four between 10.3 and 12.05 metres.
A Bora today is a fifty year old classic, and the fibreglass of that era is thick but needs checks for osmosis, deck core damage and tired fittings. Original engines and wiring are often due for renewal. The Junior can be towed; the larger boats live on a marina berth through the season and are lifted out for winter, ideally under a roof.
