Italcraft; cover, cost and conditions
Italcraft built motor yachts at Gaeta, halfway between Rome and Naples. In the 1970s the yard ran a technical design office unusually well equipped for its time. Its best known boat is the Drago, drawn by the engineer Renato Levi and shown at the Genoa show in 1972: one of the first production boats with diesel engines and surface drives, that is propellers running only half submerged. You recognise the boats by the very flat elongated superstructure, the sharply cut forefoot and a freeboard unusually low for their time.

Fifty series are recorded: the Drago and the Drago 70 S, the Maxi Drago 90 and 95, the D 70 FB, the X range with 46, 54, 62 and 68 Itago, plus Sarima, Dragster, Speedo Surfrunner, the Italcraft 105 and the C. 45, and the older numbered models 30 Ital, 35F, 65U, 74M and 78M. Lengths run from 7.5 to 31 metres, half the models between 11.9 and 21.1 metres.
A surface drive is the thing to understand about the Drago and its descendants. The propeller runs half out of the water, which cuts drag at speed but changes everything about how the drive train is loaded and how it is repaired. A boat with that kind of gear belongs with a yard that has worked it, and its condition says more about the boat than its year of build.
