J Craft Boats; cover, cost and conditions
J Craft is a Swedish name for wooden motorboats, set up in the late nineties by Björn Jansson and Johan Attvik. Its first boat was the motor yacht Polaris, built for King Carl Gustaf with master boatbuilder Johan Hallén at the bench. Every boat is made by hand and to order. Hulls are shaped from West African mahogany bent with steam, a method with deep roots in Scandinavian boatbuilding. A J Craft is easy to recognise by the depth of its finish, eighteen coats of varnish over the wood, and by lines that recall the classic runabouts of the sixties. The Torpedo line made its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2009 at 40 feet and later grew to 42.
Our model records hold a single design from the brand: the J Craft 42 ft Torpedo, listed as a motor yacht of 12.63 metres. The recorded build years run from 2014 to 2018. That puts J Craft in our records with exactly the line it is known for. No entry reaches into the most recent build years, and the earlier 40-foot Torpedo does not appear separately. Since each boat is built to order, two Torpedos under the same name can still differ in engines, upholstery and fittings, so it pays to look at the individual boat rather than the model name alone.
Varnished mahogany asks for a particular rhythm of care. The finish needs regular inspection for small cracks where water can creep under the coats, and a hull that spends the season in the sun benefits from a breathable canvas and shade when moored. Out of season a dry, ventilated shed keeps the timber stable. On a used Torpedo it is worth checking the condition of the varnish along chines and transom, the bedding of deck hardware, the state of the engine hours and service log, and whether any repairs to the planking were done by someone who knows steam-bent wood.
