De Alm builds steel yachts in the Netherlands. The business began in 1977 at Nieuwendijk; when the space ran short it moved to Werkendam on the Merwede, where it still sits, and it is now run by the second generation. What it builds are steel displacement yachts, that is ships which go through the water rather than over it, laid out for long distances and steady behaviour in a seaway. You recognise them by the tall heavy steel hull with its pronounced sheer, the solid bulwark and the wheelhouse, which on the Kotter models follows the pattern of the Dutch fishing cutter.
Our model records list 59 De Alm models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 1990 and run into current production. Fifty nine series are recorded: the Almtrawler from 1200 to 1875, each as AD, plus the Almtrawler 1320 Horizon; the Almkotter from 1080 to 1760 in the OK version for an open aft deck and AK for a closed one; the Almclassic 1400 and 1415; and the Almbakdek models 1200, 1300 and 1400. The number gives the length in centimetres, so an Almkotter 1500 AK measures around 15 metres. Lengths run from 7.9 to 29.7 metres, half the models between 12.8 and 17.2 metres.
Steel is the thing to understand here. It rusts wherever the protection is broken, and by preference where nobody looks: under the sole, behind tanks, around through hull fittings. A survey with plate thickness readings therefore tells more about an older steel yacht than its year of build. These are also boats that travel, built to keep going in weather that would send a planing hull home.
