Jachtwerf Kempers B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Jacht- en Scheepswerf Kempers was based in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands and dates back to 1900. The yard made its name with barges and with motor yachts whose build quality still has a good reputation. It traded as Scheeps- en Jachtwerf Kempers B.V. from 1979, and in 1994 Van der Valk took it over, after which no more complete yachts appeared under the Kempers name. The yard's own boats were sold as Kempala: Kreuzer for the cruisers, Kutter for the cutter-style yachts the Dutch call kotters, with the number giving roughly the length in metres.

Our records contain 16 Kempers models, 15 motor yachts and one sailing yacht. Thirteen are Kempalas: the early 920, 950, 1100 and Kutter built between 1965 and 1983, then a second generation from 1986 with six Kreuzer models from 10.00 to 13.50 and three Kutters, the 11.50, 12.50 and 13.50. The last recorded build year is 1995, for the Kreuzer 12.50. Three designs carry the Kempers name itself: the 15.15 metre C 52, the 16.2 metre 1600 TSMY and the 23.6 metre sailing yacht Kempers 23.60. The motor yachts run from 9.2 metres for the Kempala 920 to 16.2 metres.

Every Kempala afloat today is at least thirty years old, so its condition depends on how it has been kept. Boats of this type suit canals, lakes and estuaries as well as coastal hops, with a berth in summer and a shed in winter. A survey of hull, engine and wiring before buying pays off, and the woodwork inside wants dry, moving air through the winter months.
