Worth knowing
Jansen Jachtbouw; cover, cost and conditions
Jansen Jachtbouw was based in Papendrecht in South Holland, across the river from Dordrecht. The yard is better known as Jacabo, short for Jansen Casco Bouw. Casco is the Dutch word for a bare hull, and that is how the business began: building hulls that others would fit out. Later it turned out complete motor yachts of up to about 23 metres, many arranged so that owners could live aboard. The yard is now spoken of in the past tense, and its boats appear on the used market as the 1100, 1325 GL, 1700 Allure or 12.25 SL.
Our model records list five designs, four motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The oldest is a Jollenkreuzer of 9 metres, recorded for 1964 to 1971. The Jacabo 1260 at 12.6 metres follows from 1975 to 1981. The three large yachts belong to the nineties: the Jacabo 1425 at 15.8 metres, the Jacabo 1700 at 18.7 metres and the Jacabo 2000 at 21.7 metres, all built from 1990 to 1997. None of the lines runs into recent build years. Four of the five designs are longer than twelve metres, so this is a range of big inland and coastal yachts.
Dutch motor yachts of this kind are made for the canals, rivers and lakes as much as for the coast, and many have spent years as floating homes. When looking at a used Jacabo, ask how often the hull has been out of the water, check the engine room and bilges, and look at windows and deck joints for leaks. Heating, water tanks and domestic wiring age just like the engines. A full survey is well worth it on a yacht of nearly twenty metres.
