KMV Boats; cover, cost and conditions
KMV built plastic boats in Norway. The works were set up in 1959 as a subsidiary of a Kristiansand shipyard, which took over the old yard at Høllen near Søgne on the south coast for the purpose. Between 1960 and 1992 some thirty thousand boats came off the line there. The models drawn by the boat designer Bror With made the name; his hull principle of 1973 combined two things that usually exclude each other, a boat that rows well and one that planes cleanly. You recognise them by the round softly finished hull with its wide flat run aft and the very plain fitting out.
Our model records list 39 KMV models, 37 of them motorboats, one a sailing boat and one a motor yacht. Recorded build years run from 1967 to 2006; production at Høllen itself ended in 1992. Thirty nine series are recorded: the With models 320, 385, 442, 480 and 528; the KMV models 265, 285 D, 320 D, 385 D, 442, 480 D, 528 SD, 1300 D, 1600 HTD, 1700 HT and ST D, 2000 DC D and 2100; the KMV 27; and the sailing boat Firling. The number gives the length in centimetres. Lengths run from 2.6 to 8.3 metres, half the models between 3.9 and 5.3 metres.
Rowing and planing pull a hull in opposite directions. A boat that rows well is narrow and fine aft; a boat that planes is wide and flat there. Getting both out of one shape was the point of the 1973 design, and it is why these boats still turn up on Norwegian jetties decades after the factory closed.

For the With 480 by KMV Boats series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the With 528, With 320, With 385 by KMV Boats and 35 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the With 480, With 528, With 320 by KMV Boats and further series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the Firling by KMV Boats series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the KMV 27 by KMV Boats series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
