Worth knowing
Kok Grundel; cover, cost and conditions
The name Kok stands for the Scheepswerf Th. Kok in Vinkeveen, a village in the Netherlands. Theodorus Kok founded the yard in 1912, and it describes its work as traditional craftsmanship combined with modern technology. Two types are especially well known among Dutch boaters, the Kok Grundel and the Kok Kruiser, alongside the Motorgrundel, the Spitsgatkotter and further variants built in wood, polyester and steel. One Kok Grundel 900 from 1970 is described as a steel boat nine metres long and 3.10 metres wide, drawing only 80 centimetres with an air draft of 2.45 metres and suited to inland waters, lakes, rivers and canals. Those two figures say a lot about the intended home of these boats: Dutch inland water with its low bridges and shallow lakes.
Our model records hold two designs from the yard, both entered as motor yachts. The Kok Grundel 900 is listed for build years 1971 to 1977 and measures 8.75 metres. The Grundel Kotter follows from 1976 to 1983 and, at 11.4 metres, is clearly the larger boat. The two lines overlap only in 1976 and 1977, and the whole span runs from 1971 to 1983. Neither reaches the recent build years, so the youngest Kok in our list is now more than forty years old. The Grundel types numbered 1050, 1150 or 1250 and the Kok Kruiser range, which the yard also built, do not appear in our list.
With a steel motor cruiser of this age, the hull comes first. A survey with ultrasonic thickness readings shows where rust has thinned the plating, typically along the waterline, under the engine and in corners of the bilge where water collects. Look for bubbling paint inside lockers and behind panelling, since condensation in a steel hull works from the inside too. Anodes, the stern tube and the rudder fittings deserve a close look. Many of these boats spend their lives on canals and lakes, so their engines often have modest hours but may have stood idle for long periods; ask for a service history. Wiring that has been extended by several owners is worth tracing back to the panel.
