Latrex LTD; cover, cost and conditions

Latrex is a Latvian maker of small glassfibre boats, building both motorboats and rowing boats. Its own website shows models such as the Latrex 340, 400 DH, 460, 490 and 550, and a Latvian export catalogue lists the company among makers of day boats without berths, fishing boats, canoes and kayaks. The site gives no founding year. A classified advert for the Latrex 335 offers a good picture of the smaller boats: a trimaran-type hull, 3.35 metres long and 1.40 metres wide, weighing about 60 kilograms, with room for three and a limit of 7.5 kW on the outboard. Boats like this can be launched by one or two people and feel at home on lakes, rivers and sheltered coastal water.

Our model records contain 18 designs, all listed from build year 2011 onwards. Twelve are classed as motorboats and six simply as boats, without a type or a length: the Latrex 395, 400, 400 DH, 420, 440 and 470. Where a length is given, the number in the name roughly matches it in centimetres, from the Latrex 275 at 2.74 metres to the Latrex 550 at 5.45 metres. Four designs stay under four metres, the 275, 335, 340 and 355. Fifteen reach the latest build years; only the 395, the 425 and the 400 came to an end, in 2017, 2018 and 2020. The newest additions, from 2018, are the 400 DH, the 470 and the 550, the longest of the measured designs.

Small boats like these spend a lot of time on trailers and slipways, and a used one carries the marks. Check the hull for scrapes and cracks along the keel lines and at the transom, where the outboard puts its load into the laminate. A trimaran-type hull has more edges that touch the ground when beached, so look closely underneath. Make sure the outboard does not exceed the power the builder allows, and check the transom fixing points and the clamp pads. If the boat has closed buoyancy chambers and has spent winters outside, water may be trapped inside, which shows up as extra weight. Gelcoat that has stood in strong sun for years can also turn chalky and needs polishing.
